The Greatest Empire of All Time

Posted by: Dungeon Knight    in Armor, General Stuff

thumbnail 35 00312598176974b174ae1a4e8d The Greatest Empire of All TimeArmed from head to toe the Roman Army is one the greatest fighting force the world has ever seen. It has a vast array of sophisticated weaponry used to create havoc in every land they set foot on. It has the most organized and well-trained troops. Their very existence pacified most of the known world.

The Roman Army is composed of several legions which consisted several cohorts and fully equipped and organized heavy infantries called legionnaires. Each legionnaire is equipped with the most complete arsenal a Roman armor the world of that time would fear and admire.

Roman legions are most famous for their tortoise-like defense called “testudo”. It is created due to multiple soldiers compressing each other with their shields roofing and covering each side. This formation is allowed because of the type of shield they are using.

Some army sacrifices defense for offense. And that is the last thing they would think before facing an elite Roman legion. The Roman legion won’t do that because they have a very complimentary weapon for their heavy defense. Unlike some fantasy swords that are big and bulky, the Romans made their weapons of choice simpler. The Roman short sword called “gladius” is used for thrusting enemies. Its 24” length would fit to the heavily armored Roman legionnaires. Mixed with the Roman formation of tightly compacted soldiers, it is a deadly weapon.

Roman armies march a vast world, so they needed to have a “sarcina” which includes several items like food, a Roman Legionnaire’s Canteen, entrenching tools, “loculus” or a leather satchet and the stakes used for camp construction called “sudis”.

Romans are prepared, well equipped and well trained. This explains how the Romans established the greatest empire of all time.

The Evolution of Medieval Weapons

Posted by: Dungeon Knight    in Fantasy Swords, Medieval Swords, Medieval Weapons

thumbnail 22 63712598176974b174ae19356d The Evolution of Medieval WeaponsWar is a common habit of feudal lords during the medieval era in Europe. And because there’s always a threat of war, each lord has to develop more sophisticated weaponry than his counterparts.

Most types of medieval weapons are created for their functions, durability and their ability to kill. One example is the very reliable longsword. Used with two hands, it is wielded by most of the warriors at that time because of its great offensive capability which translates to more killings. There are different types and variations of the longsword.

Heavy infantry is the most used among soldiers in the army at the time. They are heavily armored with plate or mail which has high defensive capabilities so the French and the English developed a new type of sword. It is called the “estoc”. Its main purpose is to penetrate mailed or plated armor because of its great piercing power. It has no cutting edges but rather has a point.

A cavalry is very essential to a medieval warfare. And making it fully equipped is as important. They are given a long spear or a lance to charge at the enemy’s frontlines and a blade to chop at the flanks.

As more weapons are developed the more sophisticated it becomes. Just like a 17th Century Swiss Halberd, created for stabbing and bashing their opponents with its spiked axe and for massacring cavalries foolish enough to run right in front of its long pole.

There are also fantasy weapons during that time. And the most famous are fantasy swords like the Excalibur in the story of King Arthur.

Samurai as a Work of Art

Posted by: Dungeon Knight    in Fantasy Swords, Samurai Swords

thumbnail 46%20CS88WGS12598177094b174aed54df0 Samurai as a Work of ArtOne of the most valued weapons in face-to-face combat is the sword. It is highly versatile and practical. In every age, we see different types of swords wielded by numerous types of warriors.

During the classical era the Romans revolutionized the use of a sword. Most famous for its impenetrable defense, the roman legions have one of the most functional weaponry of their period. Roman legion is an organized, highly trained and highly equipped group of soldiers. They have a heavy javelin called “pilum” used to throw at their opponents on long-range and a short sword called the “gladius” used for stabbing enemies at close-range. The gladius is highly functional because roman legionnaires value their defense so they need a large shield and quite a heavy armor but they cannot carry heavy weapons so they used short swords to complement their way of killing.

After the collapse of The Great Roman Empire, came the medieval period which further revolutionized the use of swords in warfare. Most of the armies at that time carry long and heavy swords used for hacking and slashing their enemies. One of the most important swords of the time is the Cold Steel Two Handed Greatsword. It is multifunctional because it can fight numerous types of armies just like cavalry and pikemen.

Unlike its European counterparts, samurai swords are not just killing weapons, they are a work of art. They serve as a status symbol in the society. Because of how samurais value their swords, it is a home for some myths about fantasy swords.

The Great Age of the Samurai

Posted by: Dungeon Knight    in Helmets, Other replicas

thumbnail AH208212598176684b174ac41b084 The Great Age of the SamuraiFeuding warlords trying to take over each province; a great array of loyal warriors ready to give their lives for their respective lords; a land filled with chaos yet hasn’t lost its respect for culture and traditions. That is the Land of the Rising Sun at its feudal ages.

The Great Age of the Samurais would not be as it is without its splendid work of art. A common expression is bravery. It is widely seen on their most famous warriors – the samurais. Everything they wear or wield from head to toe is a masterpiece.

Samurai helmets called “kabuto” is also a name for a bug with impenetrable defense. The great defense of the bug is represented by the “kabuto” in many ways. It is made up of three to over a hundred metal plates, riveted together. The “hachi” protects the crown of the head and the “shikoro” protects the neck. Very often, the kabuto also contains the logo or the crest of the clan. One of the famous crests is on the great Takeda Shingen Kabuto & Mempo, worn by the great warlord Takeda Shingen.

The most renowned weapon of the time is the samurai swords. The Japanese sword called “katana” is made by folding pieces of metal numerously and polishing it to become the greatest weapon of that era. Unlike other swords made using a mold or other types of forging, the katana is very durable and deadly. Each sword is a military innovation at that time and also a great work of art. It is of high value amongst all of the samurai’s belongings. They even give each sword a name. It is comparable to fantasy swords wielded by some fantasy characters.

Fiercest Spear on Earth

Posted by: Dungeon Knight    in Swords

thumbnail 44%20CS95SD12598177114b174aefae3b7 Fiercest Spear on EarthWeapons experts and anthropologists consider the Cold Steel Samburu Spear as the fiercest and most powerful spear in all continents. It has been used by the Samburu tribe of Kenya since time immemorial. The Samburu tribe is found in the northern end of Kenya and you don’t get to enter their turf without subjecting yourself to one of these, not always in a gruesome sense, however.

The Cold Steel Samburu Spear can easily go side by side with your fantasy swords collection though it does not qualify for something “fantastic” or even as one of the many types of swords. However, the fact that no one knows exactly how the Samburu tribe is able to produce such a powerful weapon with the little technology they have is just a fantasy to modern-day weapons and swords designers.

You can never throw any other spear existing in the planet as accurate and as fast as the Samburu Spear would. It is clearly the deadliest of its kind. One blow can lead to a sudden and yet piercing death. It penetrates a man’s flesh like no other weapon can. It could even kill someone faster than a bullet could.

The Cold Steel Samburu Spear is a replica that weighs 2 pounds and measures 7 feet in total length. It features a short spear blade attached to the tip of this slender shaft. It was designed to kill anyone in the fastest way possible. The specific dimensions of the material allow it to create minimum force of friction in order for it take advantage of the spear’s weight and velocity.

British 18th Century Sword

Posted by: Dungeon Knight    in Fantasy Weapons, Swords

thumbnail 44%20CS88S12598177114b174aefbba79 British 18th Century SwordOne of the familiar swords that date back to 1796 Britain, the Cold Steel 1796 Light Cavalry Saber Sword has now found its way in weapons collector’s living room for quite some time now. It is not practical to use the sword in battle, now do they? They are now merely considered as fantasy swords in which people like us derive amusement from.

The Cold Steel 1796 Light Cavalry Saber Sword is a cross between the Indian tulwar and the Hungarian szabla. It is easy to understand why since both nationalities have had something to do with Britain prior to 18th century. It just so happened that the Cold Steel 1796 Light Cavalry Saber Sword has gained more global attention than the other two swords whence it was derived from.

Besides, it is quite difficult to find an authentic piece of either the Indian tulwar or the Hungarian szable because, chances are, those can only be found in museums. Replicas, however, are as scarce as the original ones so collectors would really have to settle with a—sort of—hybrid of the two swords.

The Cold Steel 1796 Light Cavalry Saber Sword was first used by the British Army. It was then introduced to their allies from Hanover and then by Blucher of the Prussians. In fact, the name “Blucher” has often been associated with the sword. If you find it popular among American, that’s because later on, the sword has also been adapted by the United States Army.

Such an interesting history, these swords have. But what good would it do for collectors? Well, let’s say that the more interesting the story is, the pricier you can have it for auction.

Fantasy Swords that Kick Ass

Posted by: Dungeon Knight    in Fantasy Weapons, Movie Replicas, Swords

thumbnail 43%20UC119312598177124b174af03da1a Fantasy Swords that Kick AssThe greatest thing about the film “Heavy Metal FAKK,” if there is any, are the props that were used by such strong characters such as the main protagonist, Julie. The Heavy Metal FAKK Sword was used by her to avenge the mysterious murder of her family.

Fantasy swords such as the Heavy Metal FAKK Sword may be a work of fiction but it is not difficult to imagine the same swords in real life. These one of a kind work of artisan prowess is proof to the hundred year’s devotion of weapons designers and craftsmen to perfect the craft.

This particular reproduction may not be one you can use for the same purpose of the one you see in the movies but it surely defines what collectors and avid film buff looks forward to in a high budgeted movie.

Measuring 33 3/16 inches in total length, the Heavy Metal FAKK Sword features an 18-inch blade crafted of 420 stainless steels. The rear edge is accented by cutout patterns, deep blood groove, and a serration right on the front edge. The design of the Heavy Metal FAKK Sword makes it a weapon that you don’t expect to be seen being held by a woman like Julie. And really, that amusing detail is what the movie is all about.

Consider this an addition to your burgeoning weapons collection or just something you get to pay homage to the film that has changed your views about women. Because that’s the only way you can save yourself from the humiliation.

Jungle 101: The Machete

Posted by: Dungeon Knight    in Other Weapons

thumbnail 17%20CS97AM1812598177174b174af5688fa Jungle 101: The MacheteEver wonder how people stranded in jungles survive? Ever wonder how Indiana Jones made it through dozens of perilous vegetation? Whips aren’t the answer. Yeah, you guessed it, they carried machetes. These blades are important for any survival tactic. With its functionality and portability, the machete is the ultimate tool against nature.

The key to surviving any jungle expedition is resourcefulness. One might remember the famous quote from Bear Grylls of Man vs. Wild to be as such “necessity is the mother of all inventions”. With barely anything, you will have to strive and make your own tools to thrive in the wilds. What better aid is there than your wits and a cold, hard machete. Of course, the chances of you being stranded in the middle of the jungle are pretty slim, but stranger things have happened.

The Cold Steel 18 inch Latin machete can prove to be the handiest tool to your survival. With an anti rust matte finish, 18 inch carbon steel and a smooth long handle, this machete can cut through anything be it vines our torso-sized tree trunks.

With Christmas season almost here, nothing says “I love you” like a machete. A perfect present for any weapon or swords enthusiast, butcher or outdoorsman, surprise your loved ones with an unexpected gift. Once you have grasped the machete in your hands, you’ll want to try it out on the nearest vegetable chopping board (unless you can find a jungle near you) and experience the euphoria of wielding it.

The Way of the Sword Collector

Posted by: Dungeon Knight    in Fantasy Swords, Samurai Swords, Samurai Weapons

thumbnail 46%20CS88BCK12598177094b174aedadf23 The Way of the Sword CollectorLong ago in ancient Japan, feudal lords battled one another for territory. These men command thousands of infantry troops called samurais, lone men whose purpose is to serve their vassal lord with honor. A samurai’s destiny is to spread honor and fame through his swordsmanship. The sword by his side, called a katana, is his lifeline, livelihood and companion.

The mastery of this so called katana takes a lifetime, where one must dedicate his entire soul solely to it. Some say that a master skilled in swordplay can slice off a butterfly’s wing with one flick of the katana, from sheath to slash. Of course, the 21st century has kept us busy from pursuing our personal desires. Though you can’t possibly dedicate your life to the sword, you can own it and feel the samurai spirit flow into you.

The Cold Steel Warrior Series Chisa Katana Sword is made out of carbon steel and underwent the same heat treatment and sharpening process as the other katana swords. The handle wrapped in black braided cord and accented with brass menuki will let you experience the finesse and balance of the blade. The sword itself is over 24 feet long.

Far from its mastery, you are a step closer to feudal Japan. Sure you can never slash a butterfly’s wings, but at least you can be the modern day samurai you always wanted to be with this samurai sword. Just don’t go waving that sharp katana around, because you don’t want to cut a finger or two.

thumbnail 20 89412598177384b174b0ac6d57 The Perfect Gift for Your Self This Holiday SeasonSword collectors and fans of the movie Gladiator are all trooping to Dungeon Knight to finally own the most accurate Gladiator movie replicas ever to grace the internet market.

This Authentic Hand Forged Roman Sword rivals only the original. In fact, by the looks of it, there is no visible difference but collectors sense that no matter how much they are willing to pay for the real thing, this is the closest that they can get.

But that does not disappoint avid collectors at all. What really gets them going is the fact that although these are not the real hand forged Roman swords, distributors assure them that they are crafted using the same material and in the same manner as that of the original. In a way, the “authentic” part is misleading but all collectors know that for a fact. Truth is that they are all aware that it is integral in the hobby.

Only big timers can own the real thing. For those who have yet to afford such, owning the real “authentic” is still a farfetched dream. But all collectors aim for that.

To feed their collection, however, they must settle for the next best thing. That would be movie replicas that are guaranteed by an official distributor. Really, the important thing in a collection are the documents to prove their authenticity, to again use the term. Rest assured that Dungeon Knight only provides replicas that guarantee that.

So go ahead, splurge and buy swords this holiday season. You deserve each of those movie replicas and fantasy swords.
