Shifting the Focus from Weapons of Death to Tools for Survival

Posted by: Dungeon Knight   in Armor

Fantasy swords abound in online markets. Long, short, Asian or Eurpoean – practically any weapon may be conveniently bought online. Such is the boost that the popularity of costume play has wrought upon the weapons reproductions industry. The Roman armor is particularly popular, perhaps because it is used not only for costume play but also for some romantic activities. Hopefully, chivalry still lives and men can still think to dress in their Roman armor, ride on a white horse and sweep the lovely maiden off her feet!

Perhaps it is time to take the focus off the war and killing and chaos that existed during the 17th century; rather, more emphasis should be made on the gallantry, chivalry and other values which propagated during those times. Instead of imparting lessons on how to fight, kill and wreak havoc, perhaps it is time to surface the peacetime culture of the peoples during those times.

Should it be difficult to immediately shift focus on peaceful practices, perhaps we could start with understanding how the warriors and soldiers were able to cope with the difficulties of their daily lives. It is inspiring to discover non-weapon items being sold online. This includes the Roman Legionnaire’s Canteen, which, while still a part of the gadgets carried in a Soldier’s bag, is not something that is used to hurt the enemy. In fact, this integral part of a Roman Legionnaire’s “Sarcina” has the primary function to sustain the soldier through the cold and the hardships that he has to endure through the march to battle.
