The Perils of Innovation

Posted by: Dungeon Knight   in General Stuff

22 1188gcomp The Perils of Innovation The 19th Century probably had the most pivotal and important developments in firearms in their history.  The percussion cap, the minie-ball, the rifled barrels (which were really a 18th Century development), precision machine tooled factories, the paper cartridge, the metal cartridge, and smokeless powder all get a lot deserved acclaim, bringing firearms to a point where swords were no longer necessary on the battlefield.  What you often don’t hear about are the flops and mistakes.  Sure, you may have heard about the Pepperbox, with Mark Twain saying that the only safe place to be when this was fired was right behind it.  What you might not have considered is the US Revolving Barrel Percussion Rifle.  At first glance, it seems rather like a great idea.  After all, the revolver is a very successful innovation that is still used to this day, particularly with weapons that fire a heavier round that most automatics aren’t designed for.  The problem with this western rifle is a little deceptive at first glance, but take a look at where you would have to put your hand to rest the barrel as you took aim. Your hand is right in front of the cartridge cylinder.  Percussion cap weapons were still black-powder weapons, and a stray spark on the adjacent cartridges could touch one or all of them off, blowing off your hand.  Considering this might make you think twice about owning such a weapon, but they make great collector’s items because they are an interesting reminder of the perils of innovation, that without the mistakes we make we often don’t figure out what works better.

The Amazing Throwing Knife

Posted by: Dungeon Knight   in General Stuff

c7362 The Amazing Throwing KnifeWhen talking about the well-known Japanese ninja, one needs to take into consideration the numerous difficulties that these warriors had to encounter. Oftentimes, ninja clans don’t have any money to dispense with, and even if they have, they discovered that they really don’t need the finest armaments to be had to be able to their work. Swords were actually too costly for their needs. The only way to be of matched to anyone, notwithstanding their status, talent or their personal weapons, is through stealth. A sole ninja need to only carry those things that are necessary to complete his job well, and at times that means going to a certain place carrying perhaps only one or ninja weapons. And if given an opportunity to pick out one certain weapon to take along with him on a mission, he’d probably take this weapon for sure – the knife. As we all know, knives are not merely effective weapons but handy tools as well. And for a ninja, knives could be hurled at an enemy, perhaps making them the most common and handy tool and weapon in his person. A collection of the 2 Pc. Throwing Knife Set is a good example of what a ninja might take along with him. Its miniature size makes it easier to conceal and then draw on quickly when the situation calls for it, plus it’s inexpensive enough that if a ninja lost it, it can be easily replace. The knife can also be re-honed in the field when necessary, the knives in most likelihood is perhaps the standard weapon for the ninja, one that he would carry with him wherever he goes more than any weapons present.

The Forbidden Sword

Posted by: Dungeon Knight   in General Stuff

jl011 The Forbidden SwordDuring the momentous date on July, 8, 1853, a small company of the US warships headed by Commodore Matthew Perry docked into Tokyo Harbor and presented the Japanese one good early-morning call. Equipped with the most advanced firepower the likes of which had never been spotted since the time when the Tokugawa Shoganate drove them out from their country to eradicate all things alien from Japan. The nation was obliged to modernize and as an effect the Haitorei Eddict of 1876 was created, prohibiting the masses to take up swords and any other weapons save the military staffs and the police. Subsequently, it ended the era of age-old tradition of Samurais. But for the latter, they consider the sword as a part of their soul. To relinquish it would mean like giving their souls in return. A lot these warriors did so on their own accord since they would always follow the mandate of their emperor, but there are also those who sacrificed their lives than be separated from something that had been passed on them for many generations. And even those that have relinquished their swords fully grasp how vulnerable they are to their past enemies who now seek revenge, especially from farmers who now see their situations raised from the time of the old samurai order. With this, a unique samurai weapons were created that made it possible for ex-samurai to own a sword but hidden in a certain manner. One good example of these weapons is the Bamboo Stick Sword. Hidden in plain walking stick, this sword is as dangerous as the katana in the possession of a well-trained samurai warrior and if apprehended with it he could actually play innocent and argue that he supposed it was a sword, taking advantage of the testimony-based legal scheme that was on the process of becoming an evidence-based legal system during that time. So, owning a set of this amazing arsenal into one’s collection will definitely impress any guest who sees it.

An Ingenuous Military Invention

Posted by: Dungeon Knight   in General Stuff

16 42 An Ingenuous Military Invention Ever since the time of Fredrick the Great, the German military has continuously find ways to improve how the soldiers perform in the field along with the things they employed out there. Among the means to which soldiers can look after themselves in combat is to use grease and fat to cover every soldier’s feet rather than socks to prevent painful blisters, an idea which originated for the Fredrick himself. Another of these innovations is the German WWII Helmet. Its source was traced back just before the outbreak of the First World War, the time when German field commander recognized the truth that as restated by Rambo, the most deadly weapon in battle, besides the brain, was field artillery.  It was and remains the King of Battle due to the extent of its damage and in most part; the helmet was created to safeguard the head from the damaging effects of shrapnel. Before the invention of the steel helmet, soldiers carry out their tasks by wearing complicated caps to identify them from the rest but field artillery have totally done away with it. Other countries like the Great Britain and France thought up their own designs but the design fabricated by the Germans was so perfect for it safeguard not only the entire head but also the ears plus it was machine stamped so factories can churn out hundreds of its kind every day. And as a proof of how good it really is, the America military and militaries from around the world adopted it and still use it up to this day. To all collector and military history aficionado the WWII Helmets are a long-awaited treat to their collection of swords, armors and other weapons, as important as the Roman Lorica or the Grand Armee’s backpack.

The Elite Rangers

Those who wear an Arizona Rangers Badge, the real one that carries with it the force of the law, not some replica Old West Badges, are actually members of a very elite law enforcement group in the past. They were formed through a legislature that was passed in the state of Arizona and vested upon powers of apprehension and abating outlaws. They may not carry swords  but they will carry with them some form of weapon to be used solely for enforcing the law. They are highly trained, very much competent and to become a Ranger was always an honor for anyone. It was a dream for many, and an honor for all. Of course, over the years they may have changed in scope and list of responsibilities, but Rangers still remain to be a well respected group of law enforcers. Nowadays Rangers are volunteers, performing tasks under supervision and guidance of police officers and other law enforcement agencies. They work solely out of their sense of duty, and they are completely unpaid. They act like an extended arm of the law, and they can be called upon to perform tasks related to law enforcement.  This indicates a very high sense of patriotism. To put your life at risk in order that the public can be safe is always commendable, more so if you do it purely as volunteer work. In this sense Rangers continue to be elite people whose intention is to uphold the letter of the law, and to perform whatever they can to help reach this goal.

The West and the Sheriff

Posted by: Dungeon Knight   in General Stuff

If there is one specific law enforcement character most associated with the western world, it is definitely the sheriff. Not the United States Marshalls, not the policemen, not anyone else but the sheriff. In the west, the sheriff is the law, and he carries with him the full authority of the law. That is why there are so many Old West Badges replica available in the market, for those who want to dress up like a sheriff. The most famous of course is the star shaped badge, such as the Lincoln County Sheriff Badge. He who wears this is a man of power, of authority, of respect. In the west, especially in the old west, where the law seems to have its own character, dos and donts, the sheriff still reigns supreme. He is the most respected of all, his word is always the final word, and even those who like to stay on the wrong side of the law fear and respect him. He may not carry too many swords, but he certainly carries with him a powerful gun. The sheriff is responsible for a county, that is his area of responsibility. Anything that happens there is his responsibility and command. He is the first point of call of anyone who is in trouble, and he also tries to resolve things at his level. Of course, he is also the link to other forces of the law, but everything goes through him first. Such is the power of the sheriff in the past. The term sheriff may not connote the same responsibilities and powers today, but there was a time when sheriffs where virtually kings of their domain.

The Best Parties

Posted by: Dungeon Knight   in General Stuff

The best parties are always those with a theme. Because when there is a theme, everyone is on the same page as to what to wear, what to expect, and even how to behave, or at least, which character to imbibe. The best parties are usually those where everyone needs to really dress up. Retro parties, glam parties, these are just some of the well attended parties, simply because people really look forward to getting all dolled up and getting into character. One other great theme is the western theme. This, too, makes for a great party because everyone is getting so busy rounding up western clothes, boots, plaid skirts and blouses, swords and even Old West Badges. Of course, most associated with the western world is the Brass Deputy Sheriff Badge and anyone who is a sheriff should pack a gun. Of course, make sure to carry guns that are non-firing. Because you can never tell what will happen in a party, it is best to stay on the safe side and not introduce any element of danger. There are many non-firing replica guns available on the market, and they really look like the real thing. Themed parties are even made greater by the unique music that accompany them. If it’s a retro party, you can be certain to hear the hits of Motown. Be ready as well to groove to its many dance hits, and shake your afro hair and bell bottomed jeans while dancing to the beat. Meanwhile in a western party be ready to belt out to good ole country songs.

Are you planning or hosting a party? Whether it is a birthday party of your son or some party for a specific celebration for an important milestone you accomplished, it is important that you select first the theme of your party so you can organize around that theme. Of course, you can just go ahead and have a party without any theme but having one makes it all more fun. You can ask people to dress up according to the theme, and that will make for really good pictures. You can have games that are consistent with the theme, and of course, you can decorate your house or whatever room you are using for the function according to the theme. This will surely put everyone in a festive mood, and will make them look forward to the party and remember it after it has been through. One nice theme to have is a western party. People will dress specifically as cowboys and cowgirls, and surely you can expect a lot of plaid polo shirts and blouses and boots. You can even give token rewards for those who dress up best. You can even give out tokens for the one who shows up with the most unique replica guns. Say, if someone showed up with a 18th Century English Replica Flintlock Pistol surely then he deserves a price. Also compare swords and choose the most real looking. Announcing these mini-contests will surely make your guests look forward to the party, and prepare for it well. And surely, they will come to your party with a heightened sense of fun!
